38. Cardi B - Bodak Yellow (Money Moves)
Weeks At #1: 3 (10/7/17-10/21/17)
Year-End Position: #24
Here's one that's hated by almost everyone. Cardi's first #1, this was definitely something interesting. The production is extremely repetitive, and a little annoying. The lyrics are nothing but generic flexing. But I love Cardi B and she carries this song. Her personality and charisma is just off the charts, and she proves it here. Thank God the version that got big was the one not including Kodak Black, as he only detracted from the song. Is this Cardi's best? No, but this was a decent first step.
37. Magic! - Rude
Weeks At #1: 6 (7/26/14-8/30/14)
Year-End Position: #7
Oh look, another decent-at-best song from 2014. There are many problems with this song. First of all, frontman Nasri Atweh has no charisma at all and can't sell a song like this. He just comes across as extremely whiny. And don't even get me started on the lyrics. No, telling someone "no" when they ask for your daughter's hand isn't the most rude thing ever. And they he goes on to say "Don't you know I'm human too?". I shouldn't have to explain why that's awful. But what keeps me from absolutely hating it.... I really don't know. I think it's that the song is just so much fun. And while overplay killed this one, it's not the worst thing in the world. Though it really didn't deserve to be #1.
36. Taylor Swift/Kendrick Lamar - Bad Blood
Weeks At #1: 1 (6/6/15)
Year-End Position: #15
One of the weakest singles off of 1989, but it's still decent. Honestly, I don't think Kendrick sounds very good here. It felt like he was just phoning this one in. However, Taylor sounds great. I also don't particularly love the pettiness of the lyrics, with this being about her beef with Katy Perry. Though, to be fair, Katy is still making songs about it, so no respect to either of them in terms of that. I don't love the production on this track. But yeah I guess Taylor carries this one, though I do prefer the solo version.
35. Pitbull/Kesha - Timber
Weeks At #1: 3 (1/18/14-2/1/14)
Year-End Position: #11
Hey look! More 2014 mediocrity! Jokes aside, I don't hate this song as some do. It's pretty fun, especially with Pitbull's "folk-tronica" production. However, I'm sure how I feel about Pitbull here. I like his energy, but his flow isn't my favorite thing. Kesha, on the other hand, is by far the best part of this song. She also brings a ton of energy, but actually still manages to sound very good. This was our first example of Kesha without a ton of autotune. So yeah, decent song, but way overrated.
34. Rae Sremmurd/Gucci Mane - Black Beatles
Weeks At #1: 7 (11/26/16-12/31/16, 1/14/17)
Year-End Position: #19
I went back and forth between decent and good on this one, and ultimately decided on the later. Honestly, Swae Lee really carries this song. Both his verse and all of the infectious choruses work really well. I like his voice. Gucci Mane and Slim Jxmmi both deliver fairly generic verses, but I'm overall glad that Swae Lee is the main presence on this one. This is one of Mike Will Made-It's best produced tracks, and that's coming from someone who strongly dislikes him as a producer. The worst part of this song is that it made Rae Sremmurd a real charting present. Though this song hit #1 because of a meme, it's still pretty solid.
33. Justin Bieber - What Do You Mean?
Weeks At #1: 1 (9/19/15)
Year-End Position: #33
Easily the weakest of Bieber's three #1s, What Do You Mean? is by no means a bad song. It's pretty good in fact, that's why I have it ranked here. But there are still some flaws. The production is fairly basic, with generic synths as the background for the whole song. Well, actually, there's also the clock in the background that just doesn't do it for me. Bieber sounds good I guess. His vocals are nothing special. Don't get me wrong, I still like the song, but it's not my favorite thing. And once again, like with PILLOWTALK, I totally understand why this hit #1. It was Bieber's big comeback, who wasn't listening to it at lest once.
32. Adele - Hello
Weeks At #1: 10 (11/14/15-1/16/16)
Year-End Positions: #35 ('15), #7 ('16)
When I think of this song, the first word that comes to my mind is overrated. Seriously, it was great, but then it got played every two songs. And it was #1 for 10 whole weeks. But a few years out, while I still consider this to be one of the most overrated tracks of the decade, it's still good. Adele sounds great of course, and the lyrics actually have meaning to them. The production is solid for the most part. But another big problem is the length of this song, clocking in at almost five minutes. The song just doesn't have enough to be the long. But as many problems as I have with it, it's still a damn good song. Just not as great as everyone says.
31. Post Malone/Ty Dolla $ign - Psycho
Weeks At #1: 1* (6/16/18)
Year-End Position: N/A
One of the most hated songs by the blogging community, I certainly don't like it as much as I used to. I went back and forth on whether to make these next two good or great, and I ultimately decided on the former for both as I'm still a little tired of them. But yeah I really shouldn't like this song at all. It's just flexing for three and a half minutes with a wasted Ty Dolla $ign feature. But something about it just clicks with me, I don't know what. Maybe it's that I like Post's flow. I'm not sure how much this really deserved to hit #1 when by far his best song (Candy Paint) didn't even get close. Well, it doesn't seem like Post Malone is going away anytime soon, so we may be seeing a third #1 from him soon.
30. Ed Sheeran (& Beyoncé) - Perfect
Weeks At #1: 6* (12/23/17-1/20/18)
Year-End Position: N/A
Like I mentioned above, I'm still a little burned out on this song. Also, I do not like that duet with Beyoncé very much. I think she does way too much vocally and it doesn't sound good. The original, however, is a great song. Ed sounds great the whole time, the production is chill, and though some may say it's boring I personally think it's a really sweet song. I might have put this as great, but I had to remove points for that duet. Anyway, I'm glad that Ed was able to get another #1 off of Divide.
*Currently charting
Check back in tomorrow for #29-#21. We're finally going to get into the great songs then!
