Ranking The Billboard Hot 100 #1s of the Past 5 Years (5/5)

Remember, I am currently running a rankdown here of all the Hot 100 #1s I ranked. Please participate if you have the time.

Anyway, here's #10:

10. Cardi B/Bad Bunny/J Balvin - I Like It

Weeks At #1: 1 (7/7/18)
Year-End Position: N/A

This is probably my favorite song that's currently popular. There's just something about it that makes me love it. And this wasn't an instant thing, in fact at first I did not like this song very much at all. To be fair, this first time I heard the song was Hits 1's radio edit. But yeah this song is just fantastic. Cardi brings a great level of energy and fun to the song, both through her verse and in the chorus. The sample works well. Bad Bunny is my least favorite part of the song, but I don't mind his part that much. J Balvin sounds amazing, as this is probably his best performance ever. The lyrics are generic brag-rap, but it doesn't matter as Cardi has the charisma to sell it. Her whole album was fantastic, and this was certainly a stand out track. I hope it can come back to the #1 spot.

9. Childish Gambino - This Is America

Weeks At #1: 2 (5/19/18-5/26/18)
Year-End Position: N/A

It's kinda hard to discuss this song without talking about the music video. But since this is just a music reviewing blog, I don't really want to dive too deep into that. I actually do like the song itself. I think the backing vocals sound good, and Gambino delivers some of his best flows ever. While I still liked Redbone, this is much better. I also like the production here. And when it comes to the lyrics, they're definitely well-written and important. I'm really shocked that this held at #1 for a second week, as it had nothing but YouTube. And I think that shows what a cultural sensation that video was, and still is. I doubt this will be very high on the year-end list, but I hope it can crack the top 50.

8. Lorde - Royals

Weeks At #1: 9 (10/12/13-12/7/13)
Year-End Position: #15 ('13), #20 ('14)

Is this Lorde's best song? No, but it's Lorde so it's still fantastic. The lyrical content is fantastic, essentially just dissing musical "royalty". There isn't very much to the production, but what there is works incredibly well. I really like Lorde's voice, and she sounds really good here. This spawned a bunch of Lorde-wannabes (Alessia Cara, Julia Michaels, Daya) which is probably this worst thing about it. It really sucks that she'll always be remembered as a one-hit wonder (a lot of people I know forgot about Team). I'm happy that this got to top the chart for so long, and then it eventually won the Grammy for Song of the Year in 2014. It deserved.

7. Justin Bieber - Love Yourself

Weeks At #1: 2 (2/13/16, 2/27/13)
Year-End Position: #1

As I've mentioned in a couple other blurbs, I was very surprised to see this as Billboard's #1 song of the year. However, I actually agree with it being there. This is Bieber's best song by far. I love the production here. It's once again very chill, but I think that it's great. Bieber sounds fantastic, delivering the best vocal performance of his careers. And the lyrics are pretty clever. I don't expect many people to agree with me on this one, but I still love it.

6. DJ Khaled/Justin Bieber/Quavo/Chance The Rapper/Lil Wayne - I'm The One

Weeks At #1: 1 (5/20/17)
Year-End Position: #12

Another song that I expect none of you to agree with me on, I still love I'm The One. This is probably my favorite song from DJ Khaled. Bieber's hook sounds really great here. I actually really like Quavo and Chance's verses, and I don't mind Lil Wayne's verse. When I was gone earlier in the summer, this song was stuck in my head the whole damn month, which made me love it even more when I heard it again when I got home. Great summer jam. I totally get why this got the #1 debut, but I wish it could have stayed there a little longer instead of Despactio. This was a win for all artist for sure.

5. Kendrick Lamar - HUMBLE.

Weeks At #1: 1 (5/6/17)
Year-End Position: #4

DAMN. was an incredible album. This is an incredible song. I shouldn't have to explain why this is fucking awesome and the 5th best #1 of the past 5 years. Kendrick's flow is fantastic, this song was what made many fall in love with him. The production is damn near perfect, as are the lyrics. When I was at a camp that summer, everyone was constantly repeating lyrics from this song. I had only heard the song a couple of times at that point, as I wasn't really into music back then. But then this song entered my regular rotation when I got back home and it has stayed there ever since.

4. Ed Sheeran - Shape of You

Weeks At #1: 12 (1/28/17, 2/18/17-4/29/17)
Year-End Position: #1

Ed Sheeran's big comeback was something special, and I still love it to this day. Unlike HUMBLE., this song is much more chill, with fairly simplistic production. And when you have simple production, you have to do everything perfectly. And Ed Sheeran did. The production is fantastic, giving this song one of the most recognizable beats of the 2010s. Ed sounds fantastic, delivering the mood of the song through his voice very well. This song was panned by critics because "Ed Sheeran can't make a convincing sex song". While I respect their opinion, I have to disagree. I've loved this song from first listen, and probably always will.

3. OMI/Felix Jaehn - Cheerleader

Weeks At #1: 6 (7/24/15-8/15/15, 8/29/15-9/5/15)
Year-End Position: #11

A friend of mine once called this the best pop song of the century. While I don't quite agree with that, I agree that it is a fantastic song. This was the 2015 song of the summer according to Billboard, and I believe it deserved that spot. OMI sounds really great in this song. The horns work really well, and I overall think Felix Jaehn does a great job with the production. I think OMI said the melody of the song was an old Jamaican nursery rhyme, which I thought was kinda cool. I expect to be by far the highest ranking for this song in the rankdown, but I don't care. This is a great song.

2. Wiz Khalifa/Charlie Puth - See You Again

Weeks At #1: 12 (4/25/15-5/30/15, 6/13/15-7/18/15)
Year-End Position: #3

From Furious 7, this song was originally made as a tribute for Paul Walker. Wiz Khalifa didn't actually write this song. There was a contest for someone to write a song for Walker, and Charlie Puth entered in the contest. He eventually won. Then this song became a bigger hit than anyone could have possibly expected. I love the pianos here, as well as the rest of the production. Puth sounds incredible, and Wiz Khalifa sounds really good as well. I really like the lyrically content here. I think that people have been using this song too much at things like a graduation, going away party, etc. and it's kinda taking away the meaning of it. But aside from that, I love this song.

Most of you have probably already figured out what my #1 is, and here it is:

1. Mark Ronson/Bruno Mars - Uptown Funk!

Weeks At #1: 14 (1/17/15-4/18/15)
Year-End Position: #1

Everything about this song is great. This song was always playing, and yet I never got tired of it. It deserved every week at #1 it got, at the time making it the 2nd longest running #1 of all time. I love the production here, making it a fun song to turn up when you're driving around. Bruno Mars sounds really great here, and this started his new direction which I love. The lyrics are pure flexing, but they're still great. I don't know one person who doesn't like this song. Even my cousin, who was like three at the time, would always ask us to play Uptown Funk! whenever we were with him. (I just realized that my whole top 3 is from 2015).
