#1 Song This Week One Year Ago: Imagine Dragons - Thunder (2)

New Entrants
~Let Me Down Slowly is terrible. Nothing about this is good. The production is dull and has almost no life to it. The lyrics are whiny as all hell, as he begs a girl who seems to not be very into him to let him down slowly, as he gives us quality lines such as "a little sympathy I hope you can show me". As much as I can complain about the lyrics, the worst part of the song is his voice. Like seriously who told this kid to start making music? I doubt this will do well here, but that's what I thought about I Wanna Know so you never know.

~Nervous is fine. It's basically the exact same song as Bad Liar from last year, but worse. Yet apparently people like this one? I guess the lyrics are decent. The production is pretty good. But what makes me not like it is Shawn's vocals. He sounds totally checked out on the song. Knowing Hits 1's love for Mendes, I would be shocked if this doesn't at least hit the top 20.

~Easily the best debut this week comes from two of my favorite artists these days, being Post Malone and Swae Lee. Both of them sound fantastic here. I may be sick of Better Now at the moment, but it is true that Post has shown his vocals off very well this year. However, I do believe Sunflower may be his best vocal performance yet. Swae also sounds very good, though nothing can top his performance in Unforgettable. The production here is also on point. This had better do really well here.

~The highest debut comes from Camila Cabello with her newest single, Consequences. I'll keep this one brief. I do like Camila's vocals here quite a bit, I think she's definitely improving in that department. The piano here is also very nice. And the lyrics are very well written. Overall, I hope she gets her third #1 here from this.

Best Debut of the Week: Post Malone/Swae Lee – Sunflower (#30)

Hit-Bound
  • Ava Max - Sweet But Psycho (DEBUT)
  • Twenty One Pilots - Chlorine
  • Ariana Grande - thank u, next
  • James Arthur - Empty Space (DEBUT)
  • Little Mix/Nicki Minaj - Woman Like Me
  • Imagine Dragons - Machine
  • 5 Seconds of Summer - Killer Queen
  • Zara Larson - Ruin My Life (DEBUT)
  • Steve Aoki/BTS  - Waste It On Me
  • Lauren Jauregui - Expectations
  • Lauv/Julia Michales - There's No Way
  • Ellie Goulding & Diplo/Swae Lee - Close To Me
  • David Guetta/Anne-Marie - Don't Leave Me Alone
  • Olly Murs/Snoop Dogg - Moves
~So... I can't say I understand all the love for Sweet But Psycho. The beat is a little generic, as it doesn't really change throughout the song ever. The lyrics are trying to be something, but they're buried beneath too many metaphors for it to work. Lastly, I just don't like Ava Max's voice. I could see this growing on me, but I'm not sure.

~I liked Say You Won't Let Go, if for only the reason that it was a very sweet song. But this really isn't. Arthur doesn't sound good, and I don't like the trap beat that is used in the beginning. Let's not let this make it to the countdown.

~I do quite like the verses in Ruin My Life. However, I find the chorus to be grating. Larson sounds pretty good, but I don't love the lyrics here. The production is very average. This will likely grow on me soon.

My Top 5 Hit-Bound Picks
1. Olly Murs/Snoop Dogg - Moves
2. David Guetta/Anne-Marie - Don't Leave Me Alone
3. Ariana Grande - thank u, next
4. Ellie Goulding & Diplo/Swae Lee - Close To Me
5. uhhhhh... Zara Larson - Ruin My Life I guess????

My Bottom 5 Hit-Bound Picks
1. Imagine Dragons - Machine
2. James Arthur - Empty Space
3. Lauv/Julia Michales - There's No Way
4. Steve Aoki/BTS  - Waste It On Me
5. Twenty One Pilots - Chlorine

Empty Blurbs
~The only song I'm really sad to see leave is Jackie Chan. That was a great song that deserved better. Heart To Break was good but nothing special. Free Free Free was essentially the definition of mediocre. And lastly, Drew Barrymore was absolutely awful. I hope to never hear it again.

~Kamikaze took a huge drop to the bottom ten. I don't like this as much as nearly everyone else seems to, but that doesn't mean I hate it. I would not mind if it dropped out soon.

~I Wanna Know finally fell out of the top 30. This song has been around too long, and it was never that good to begin with. I suppose it is nice that I'm no longer the only person who hates this song.

~So Tequila dropped out of the top 20. I don't care about the song, so I'm fine with it. I suppose it is an objectively good song, but I just don't ever feel much desire to listen to it.

~That jump for Hey Look Ma, I Made It really didn't last huh? I am still putting off giving my full review of this until it becomes an official single because I'm petty as fuck.

~Ugh why did Don't Go Breaking My Heart have to re-enter the top 20???

~This Feeling entered the top 5 this week. I'm really confused why people are calling this one of The Chainsmokers's best songs. It doesn't even come close to hitting the heights of Paris, Roses or Closer, and it's still significantly worse than Something Just Like This and Side Effects.
