Billboard Overview - Lady Gaga, Lil Baby, & more (Week of 10/20/18)

 Hi everyone. I really have nothing to say, so let's just get right into the Hot 100:

2. Juice WRLD - Lucid Dreams (#3) [+1]
1. Maroon 5/Cardi B - Girls Like You (#1) [=] {4th Week At #1}

~As far as our exits go, there were all Wayne. The only ones I'll even consider revisiting are Mona Lisa and Uproar. The others are forgettable or just straight up bad.

~Eastside is amazing. I love absolutely everything about this song. I've heard some hate for Halsey's vocals, but I think this her best vocal performance. The production is phenomenal, and Khalid sounds great as always. I'll review this more when it debuts on Hits 1.

~Now on a worse not, we have Without Me. After just praisingHalsey, I have to say she sounds terrible. Like I can't stand her voice here at all. The production is slow, boring, plodding and terrible. And the lyrics suck. I don't think there's another song currently in radio rotation that I just want to end as much as I do with this one. After re-listening to it, I no longer think this is worse than songs like FEFE or SAD!, but it still sucks.

~I don't hate Never Recover. At least not yet. It think the best here is pretty decent, and the fast flows from all three artists are pretty good. And looking at who's featured on here, I expect it to stay around awhile.

~Shallow is arguably the best song off of the soundtrack to A Star Is Born. Both artists involved sound very good, and I like the more stripped back acoustic production. If it wasn't for Eastside entering the top 20, this would probably be in purple.

~Drip Too Hard is just so mediocre. Neither Lil Baby nor Gunna is talented and the beat sucks. Can we stop giving Lil Baby hits please?

Billboard 200
Out of the top 10:
71. Tom Petty - An American Treasure (#9) [-62]
43. Cher - Dancing Queen (#3) [-40]
27. Logic - YSIV (#2) [-25]
16. XXXTENTACION - ? (#10) [-6] {1 Week At #1}
12. Kevin Gates - Luca Brasi 3 (#4) [-8]
11. Eminem - Kamikaze (#6) [-5] {1 Week At #1}

10. Post Malone - beerbongs & bentleys (#8) [-2] {3 Weeks At #1}
9. Travis Scott - ASTROWORLD (#7) [-2] {2 Weeks At #1}
8. Drake - Scorpion (#5) [-3] {5 Weeks At #1}
7. for KING & COUNTRY - Burn The Ships (DEBUT)
6. Steve Perry - Traces (DEBUT)
5. Eric Church - Desperate Man (DEBUT)
4. Lil Baby & Gunna - Drip Harder (DEBUT)
3. Lil Wayne - Tha Carter V (#1) [-2] {1 Week At #1}
2. Twenty One Pilots - Trench (DEBUT)
1. Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper - A Star Is Born Soundtrack (DEBUT) {1st Week At #1}

~In terms of our exits, the four debuts from last week were expected. I'm surprised, and annoyed, that Kevin Gates's album fell the least. ? really shouldn't have jumped back into the top 10 last week, so it's good that that one's falling again. And lastly, Kamikaze begins it's chart descent much sooner than I expected. Not complaining though.

~So... yeah. A soundtrack is my favorite album in the top 10. I feel like comparing this to something like The Greatest Showman is just wrong. That album was boring and almost all filler. This album tells a story, and I can understand it without watching the movie. It starts with lots of Bradley Cooper solo songs, as he takes on a country-rock combo that works surprisingly well. Then we get to the love songs between them, where Lady Gaga and Cooper show off their legitimately great chemistry. Through most of the latter half, we have Gaga basically just talking about Cooper breaking her heart, and this stuff honestly reminds me a lot of her older stuff. And lastly, we have the conclusion to the story, where Cooper tries to fix things, and says that he wants Gaga back. (I have no idea if this is the actual plot of the movie but that's what I got from the lyrics). I don't tend to enjoy soundtracks, as I think that can't really stand on their own without the movie (due to losing story elements) but this one works really well. Definitely recommended, give it a listen.

~I don't really understand all the love for Twenty One Pilots's newest album, titled Trench. Aside from the singles, I can't say that I enjoyed much of this album. A majority of the tracks were overly long. Most are at least four minutes long, some are about five minutes, and some are even pushing six minutes. Tyler Joseph's vocals become very grating towards the end of the album, and his rapping could use some work honestly. My biggest problem with the album is how much is just blends together. Almost all the production sounds virtually the same, which makes it feel like I'm listening to an hour long song. Also, the lyrics are total nonsense and don't let anyone tell you different. Though I do enjoy the disses at "The Clique".

~Drip Harder is just a mess. Neither Lil Baby nor Gunna has any talent to speak of. Maybe the guest features could save it? No, not at all. Lil Durk and NAV are non-presences on the opening track, Young Thug sucks as always (minus Havana) on his verse, and Drake does his whole thing on his verse. The production is lazy, and the lyrics are nothing special. The less said about this album the better.

~I have to say, Desperate Man is probably the best country album I've heard in a while. I really like Church's voice, I wish we heard more people like him in country music. Whatever, that's country for you. The production kinda blends together at times, but I do really enjoy it for the most part.The lyrics are well written and better than most country music these days. And the whole album is just over half and hour, meaning I'm not taking up all my free time listening to it. Definite recommendation.

~Former Journey frontman Steve Perry brings us Traces this week. The first thing that jumps out to me about this album is his age. He's nearly seventy and still making music, which while impressive really shows. His vocals are pretty mediocre throughout the entire album. In fact, mediocre is a good word to describe this whole project. The production lacks any really edge to it, and the lyrics aren't unique. But it's his vocals that really kill this for me. Unless you like stan Journey or something, skip this.

~Look, I really don't like criticizing Christian gospel music. I know it's intended for a specific audience, and I am just not that audience. But it's just so boring I hate listening to it. I legitimately struggle to get through these types of albums. Lackluster production, boring vocals, and God-oriented lyrics that just don't appeal to me. I'll just leave it at that, as I'm really not qualified to talk about this.

Artist 100
Out of the top 10:
OUT. Logic (#3) {1 Week At #1}
56. Cher (#2) [-54]
16. Ariana Grande (#10) [-6] {3 Weeks At #1}
14. XXXTENTACION (#9) [-5] {2 Weeks At #1}
11. Eminem (#6) [-5] {3 Weeks At #1}

10. Steve Perry (DEBUT)
9. Imagine Dragons (#7) [-2] {1 Week At #1}
8. Post Malone (#1) [=] {2 Weeks At #1}
7. BTS (#4) [-3] {2 Weeks At #1}
6. Drake (#5) [-1] {31 Weeks At #1}
5. Lil Wayne (#1) [-4] {1 Week At #1}
4. Eric Church (RE-ENTRY)
3. Bradley Cooper (#47) [+44]
2. Twenty One Pilots (#62) [+60] {4 Weeks At #1}
1. Lady Gaga (#30) [+29] {3rd Week At #1}

~I'm assuming that Lil Baby and Gunna aren't here because the credit for the album was split between the two of them?

~Congrats to Bradley Cooper for out-peaking Khalid, Lil Baby, Juice WRLD, Luke Combs, Marshmello, Bebe Rexha, Bazzi, Dua Lipa, and many, many more actual artists on this chart. I have him in dark green as I don't think it's fair to judge him as a musical artist, as he was barely involved with the writing or production of A Star Is Born. I like his voice though.

~Two recipients of best week this week. It goes to Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper for getting a very unique mini-album bomb, since it was based off of sales. H.M. for Lil Baby and Gunna, but they missed the #1 album and had a more basic album bomb. Worst week goes for Twenty One Pilots for not getting the #1 album, and barely charting anything.

Genre Charts
Talking about the same songs all the time gets a little boring. I don't know if this will be a lasting thing, but for this post I'll be picking a "bubbling under" song on each chart. Basically a song that is in the bottom half of the chart that I hope gets big. It also has to have not peaked too high for too long for it to qualify.
Mainstream Top 40:
5. Selena Gomez - Back To You (#5) [=]
4. Maroon 5/Cardi B - Girls Like You (#3) [-1] {5 Weeks At #1}
3. Post Malone - Better Now (#2) [-1] {2 Weeks At #1}
2. Khalid/Normani - Love Lies (#4) [+2] {2 Weeks At #1}
1. 5 Seconds of Summer - Youngblood (#1) [=] {3rd Week At #1}

~Youngblood is really unchallenged here. Unless God is a woman or Happier starts gaining fast, I see this staying at the top for a long time.

Bubbling Under Song: LSD - Thunderclouds (Currently: 30, Peak: 30)
~It's a shame that Cheap Thrills got to #1 but this is flopping.

Hot Rock Songs:
5. Weezer - Africa (#5) [=]
4. Imagine Dragons - Thunder (#4) [=] {24 Weeks At #1}
3. lovelytheband - broken (#2) [-1]
2. Panic! At The Disco - High Hopes (#3) [+1]
1. Imagine Dragons - Natural (#1) [=] {9th Week At #1}

~Despite three Twenty One Pilots songs gaining to just outside the top 5, we still cannot get rid of Thunder. God damn it.

~My one dream left in life is to blog a week of Hot Rock Songs where Imagine Dragons isn't #1.

Bubbling Under Song: The Interruptors - She's Kerosene (Currently: 30, Peak: 20)
~Only got pushed down because of the Twenty One Pilots album bomb here. I'm pretty sure it'll rebound next week, and it better because it's a damn great song.

2. Post Malone - Better Now (#3) [+1]
1. Juice WRLD - Lucid Dreams (#2) [+1] {2nd Week At #1}

~I get why most of these rappers are popular. I even get why Juice WRLD is popular. But I really don't get the Lil Baby/Gunna thing.

Bubbling Under Song: Eminem/Joyner Lucas - Lucky You (Currently: 30, Peak: 5)
~Please. Please make this a hit, America.

Hot Dance/Electronic Songs:

2. DJ Snake/Selena Gomez/Ozuna/Cardi B - Taki Taki (#2) [=]
1. Marshmello/Bastille - Happier (#1) [=] {4th Week At #1}

~How do I write blurbs when literally nothing changed?

Bubbling Under Song: Marshmello - Stars (Currently: 49, Peak: 31)
~Well produced, complex EDM. And yet we made FRIENDS the big hit.

Hot Country Songs:
5. Russell Dickerson - Blue Tacoma (#5) [=]
4. Luke Combs - She Got The Best Of Me (#4) [=]
3. Dan + Shay - Tequila (#2) [-1]
2. Florida Georgia Line - Simple (#3) [+1]
1. Bebe Rexha/Florida Georgia Line - Meant To Be (#1) [=] {46th Week At #1}

~Yup. Meant To Be is still #1. Why though? This isn't even country.

Bubbling Under Song: Carrie Underwood - Love Wins (Currently: 35, Peak: 26)
~I pinned this as a stand-out from Cry Pretty early on due to the well written lyrics. But it just seems like Carrie can't get a hit this year. Quite a shame if you ask me.

Best Chart: Mainstream Top 40
Worst Week: Hot Country Songs
