New Entrants
~Out of this week's six debuts, I'm very glad that Too Good was the lowest. It's our first bottom five debut in a while. I can understand why somebody would like this, I just find it incredibly annoying and repetitive. I'm hoping it's low debut is foreshadowing a flop here, and I wouldn't say it's impossible.
~Love Is Bigger Than Anything In Its Way is just underwhelming in my opinion. I'm not sold on the production, and I guess that's more of Cheat Code's fault, but they're the only reason Hits 1 picked up on this song in the first place. I will say that the vocals are good, I just don't enjoy the rest of it.
~Youngblood enters the countdown the same week as the album of the same name is released. I like this song, but I find it a little annoying that this is only here because of Hits 1's love for 5 SoS, while they don't pick up on songs like Nice For What, horribly edit I Like It, and brutally underrate God's Plan. It's pretty stupid if you ask me.
~We finally get Pray on the countdown after many weeks on hit-bound. I used to like this song a lot more than I do now. It's still good, don't get me wrong, but I'm enjoying Logic's verses less and less. Sam Smith still sounds incredible, though. I doubt this song will stay with me long.
~Familiar is another song that suffers from Hits 1's awful radio edits. The song just loses a lot without J Balvin. The first verse is really short, and there's just no third verse at all. And with a chorus as repetitive as this one, the radio edited Familiar will not last with me for long.
~And lastly, Girls Like You enters the countdown at #22. I honestly thought this would be higher, but I'm fine with it here. I hope that this song can knock Wait down a little, as Girls Like You is much better. Most of the song is decent, but what makes it good is the third verse and the bridge. Adam Levine actually sounds good here, and Cardi B is just incredible as always. I'm hoping this can continue to do well.
Best Debut: 5 Seconds of Summer - Youngblood (though it would be Familiar if it weren't for the awful radio edit)
Hit-Bound
- Big Boi - All Night (DEBUT)
- Cole Redding - Father Father (DEBUT)
- In Real Life - Tattoo (How 'Bout You)
- The Wrecks - James Dean
- Dennis Lloyd - Nevermind
- Fall Out Boy - The Last Of The Real Ones
- Panic! At The Disco - High Hopes
- Meghan Trainor - Let You Be Right
- Backstreet Boys - Don't Go Breaking My Heart
- Cardi B
/Bad Bunny/J Balvin- I Like It (Radio Edit) - lovelytheband - broken
- HRVY - Personal
- Sugarland/Taylor Swift - Babe
- MNEK/Hailee Steinfeld - Colour (DEBUT)
- BTS - FAKE LOVE (DEBUT)
~The first of our debuts comes from a song I did not expect Hits 1 to pick up on. I've been listening to All Night for a while now, and I don't like it now as much as I used to, but I still think it's a good song. It's really fun and catchy. I have a feeling that this is going to not do well here, but I hope it does.
~Father Father is Hits 1's new random song. Mikey Piff said he played this because it was Father's Day this weekend, so I wouldn't be shocked to see this drop out next week. It's fine, but it's nothing special. But it bothers me that they would rather played this over Nice For What.
~Colour is easily the best hit-bound debut this week. I had never heard of MNEK before this, but he definitely impresses me. His voice sounds pretty good, and the production on the song is good also. But Hailee Steinfeld is the real stand out here. Her verse is so impressive, and the way she is able to sing that fast is incredible. I hope this has success here.
~Oh boy. More BTS. Judging by Kid Kelly's Twitter, they started playing this so the BTS "Army" would vote for Kid Kelly to be in the Radio HoF. BTS honestly has no talent, aside from being kinda hot, but they're really not that good looking. I've hated this song since their performance of it at the Billboard Music Awards. Nothing about it sounds good. Though looking at Hits 1's tendancy to obsess over boy bands (5 SoS, One Direction, etc.) I see this debuting very soon.
My Top Five Hit-Bound Picks:
1. Fall Out Boy - The Last Of The Real Ones
2. MNEK/Hailee Steinfeld - Colour
3. Panic! At The Disco - High Hopes
4. In Real Life - Tattoo (How 'Bout You)
5. Big Boi - All Night
Blurbs Like You
~Lots of big drops and jumps this week, so let's break it all down.
~As far as the exits go, I still liked Finesse but it was fading on me. I enjoyed Hurt Somebody for what it was, but I'm not too sad about it's exit. Bad At Love was far overdue. I'm glad about that one. Lights Down Low had a solid run and I'm sad to see it go, but it was going to become to longest tenured song ever soon, and I knew there was no way Hits 1 was letting that happen, so I'm not surprised. No Excuses got really old really fast. Lastly, All The Stars leaves after only four weeks. I wish this one could have stayed longer. It's a really great song and the better single off of the Black Panther soundtrack. All The Stars, you will be missed.
~Four songs were tied for the biggest drop this week. I'm satisfied with Him & I falling, as it just gets worst with every listen. I'm starting to grow out of Let Me Go so I hope it exits before I get really sick of it. As I said last week, I cannot stand Zombie. And combined with the fact that it isn't big anywhere else I'm perfectly okay with this drop. Lastly, Tell Me You Love Me takes a big fall. I was starting to grow into this one a little, but I'm not heartbroken about this drop. It'll likely recover from it next week.
~I'm glad to see Perfect entering the bottom five. This song was just so overplayed. I've grown back into it a little with the lack of airplay, but not completely. This is essentially a lock for the top 10 of Hits 1's year-end countdown.
~Speaking of airplay, Mine continues to do nothing on this countdown despite being played a ton on pop radio. And Psycho drops 10 even though it's huge everywhere else. And Fake Ass Friends takes a huge jump despite being virtually unknown everywhere. I don't get Hits 1 logic.
~I'm fine with Over My Head jumping. I've grown into this one a little bit, but I doubt it will stay this high.
~Both of last week's debuts took some nice jumps this week. I'm a little annoyed that Rich jumped higher, though Spyder Harrison mentioned that it was his favorite song so that might have something to do with it. I have a feeling that both of these songs will have some solid countdown runs.
~Thank god Sober Up took a major drop this week. There is nothing appealing about this song. Let's get it out of here as soon as we can. Let Me also took quite the drop, and I wouldn't be surprised if we lost this next week.
~Ariana Grande randomly renamed her current single from No Tears Left To Cry to no tears left to cry. I don't get it. I've grown into this song a little, so I'm happy about this jump.
~Back To You took a nice jump this week. This one has become my new favorite song, it's Selena's best song in a while. I'm hoping this one can keep doing well.
~Say Amen held at the #1 spot this week, which while annoying isn't surprising. I just hope that On The Loose can hit #1 next week.

ReplyDeleteBEST WEEK OF 2018!
I agree that it was the best week this year, I just still dislike some of the higher placing songs
DeleteSame here. My Top 20 Review scored 85%, which is the highest it's ever been.
DeleteGreat post!
ReplyDeleteI don't know if you remember this song, but in 2016 a song called Never Forget You by Zara Larsson that was a big hit. That song featured MNEK. I said that in case you needed a reminder because that was what he was most successful for in his career and Idk if you just forgot it.
Yeah I remember that. I wasn't listening to the countdown back then and I guess I didn't know it was him
