New Entrants
~We got four very good debuts this week. The lowest of those was Colour. This is really only here because Hits 1 loves Hailee Steinfeld (who did a great job opening for Charlie Puth), and her part in this song is very good. I'm impressed by her ability to sing that fast and still sound great. MNEK sounds good as well. The lyrics are sweet, about how someone coming into your life can light up your whole world. The production is a little basic, so I could get bored of it, but right now I really like and hope to see it do well.
~Our next debut came from Post Malone with Better Now. This is for sure a step up from Psycho. It's still not quite as good as Candy Paint, but it's close. Post actually sounds pretty good in this good, his vocals have definitely been improving. I also really like the production on this track, I think it's very catchy. It's much better than the generic trap beat he used for Psycho. And the lyrics are way less obnoxious than his past work. Overall, it's a very solid song, and with Hits 1 kinda becoming Post fans recently I wouldn't be shocked if this did well.
~Our next debut is from new artist Madison Beer whose debut single Home With You seems to be gaining tractions everywhere. Basically all I've seen anyone say about this song is that she has unique voice, so I'll try to give my full thoughts on it. Her vocals are solid. I like the lyrically theme, where she trying to tell some guy who won't leave her alone to go away. The production isn't my favorite, but it's good enough. I wouldn't mind seeing this do well.
~Our final debut is the comeback single from Twenty One Pilots, Jumpsuit. I already talked about it when it debuted on the Alt-8. Right now, I like it. I think Tyler Joseph sounds good (until he starts screaming at the end at least). The production is good enough. I didn't like any of their older singles that much due to overplay, and I fear that this one will follow in the same path. It's a Twenty One Pilots song so it will definitely be overplayed, the question is how well it can survive.
Best Debut of The Week: Post Malone - Better Now
Hit-Bound:
- Bebe Rexha - I'm A Mess
- Charlie Puth - The Way I Am (DEBUT)
- BROWN & GRAY - Top Down
- Imagine Dragons - Natural (DEBUT)
- Dennis Lloyd - Nevermind
- Big Boi - All Night
- The Chainsmokers/Drew Love - Somebody
- lovelytheband - broken
- Julia Michaels/Trippie Redd - Jump
- Ariana Grande - God Is A Woman (DEBUT)
- Train/Cam/Travie McCoy - Call Me Sir
- Justin Timberlake - SoulMate
- Dan + Shay - Tequila
- Years & Years - If You're Over Me (DEBUT)
- BTS - FAKE LOVE
~I like The Way I Am. Charlie Puth still sounds good, and the production is also solid. But damn Charlie Puth has terrible single choice. There's much better choices on Voicenotes as a new single. Like, almost anything would be better. It's still good, but he could have done better.
~I'm not a fan of Imagine Dragons honestly. Night Visions was okay, but all of Evolve save for Believer was disappointing. I also don't like hard rock. So when the two combined it's not great. My biggest problem with this is Dan Reynolds. I just don't think he sounds that good.
~With No Tears Left To Cry hitting it's peak basically everywhere, Ariana Grande released God Is A Women. She still sounds great as always, but the production is a little underwhelming. I'll talk about this more when it debuts.
~There isn't much to If You're Over Me, but what there is makes it a great song. The production and vocals both work really well together and I also enjoy the lyrics. This song is charting on pop radio so I could see this debuting, but I'm not totally sure. I hope it will.
~I've grown out of a few songs. Tequila has begun to bore me, and Jump and SoulMate have started annoying me.
My Top 5 Hit-Bound Picks:
1. Dennis Lloyd - Nevermind
2. Years & Years - If You're Over Me
3. BROWN & GRAY - Top Down
4. Bebe Rexha - I'm A Mess
5. Charlie Puth - The Way I Am
Blurber Now
~In terms of our exits, I was happy to see New Rules back but I'm not heartbroken to see it go. Fake Ass Friends wasn't popular elsewhere, so I don't mind it leaving. I really liked These Days, but it was fading on me. And I never liked Him & I.
~We're still stuck with In My Blood as our #1. Every time I hear this song, I just get more and more bored by it. Meanwhile, we have Delicate at the #2 spot. I'm hoping this can retake the #1 spot next week.
~We got some annoying jumps this week from Don't Go Breaking My Heart and Too Good, both of which are loved by the blogging community. And... I don't get it. Too Good is mediocre at best. While the vocals are okay, the production and lyrics are just annoying. And everything about Don't Go Breaking My Heart just sucks. From the failed attempt at a beat drop, the mediocre vocals, and generic lyrics. I'm sorry, but these lyrics are not deep or very meaningful. I've heard this same thing many times before. I really hope neither of these jumps last.
~On the other hand, The Last Of The Real Ones made a great jump into the top 20. I've been enjoying this one a lot recently. It's the "hit-bound song of the week" now, so I can probably expect this to enter the top 10. Don't be surprised if this becomes purple soon.
~Three songs took some pretty big drops. I don't care about Rich. However, it is disappointing to see Familiar and Done For Me, especially the later, fall so much. It sucks that the best song from each artist are the ones that do the worst. They both exited the American Top 40 last week, so their days are numbered.
~Despite being huge in other places, Psycho and Mine both fall into the bottom 5. I'm starting to get tired of Psycho, but seeing Mine fall is quite disappointing. I wish that one could have done better.
~I Wanna Know is still in the top 20 because... Anyone? Does anyone understand this?
~I Like Me Better thankfully has dropped all the down to #38. I swear if this song has the biggest jump ever again I will be pissed off.
~Say Amen and High Hopes swapped spots. I've grown back into Say Amen a lot, but I don't mind it dropping as it isn't popular elsewhere. High Hopes has a real chance to be #1 next week, but only because Hits 1 loves Brendon Urie.
~I've officially decided that I don't like Whatever It Takes. This song has been in the top 5 way too long, and it's not leaving anytime soon. I'm just so tired of this one.
