Remember when I said this would be out in December? Yeah.....
As I've said before, 2018 wasn't all that great of a year for popular music. But as we all know, Hits 1 doesn't give two fucks about whats actually popular. So how was the music on Hits 1? Well, it was pretty good overall. Though we did have some song hit #1 and spend a really long time on the countdown that weren't all that good, we also had some real quality at the top spot. Color-coding works the same as it does for all year-end posts. Here's the list (not doing full write-ups about them because of my year-end Hot 100 ranking):

~How about that #1 huh? I don't think a single person is surprised about it, and while I'll certainly take it over the #2 song, it's still not exactly ideal. To be fair, there was a period of time where I LOVED The Middle. Like Montavis-level loved it. But that was before I started Blogging, and once I did the song slowly started to fade on me. At this point, I'm just numb to it. The drop is kinda annoying, but more than anything else its just there. Not worthy of being the #1 song, but whatever at least its not Imagine Dragons or a non-hit.
~Speaking of non-hits, we've got a lot of them here. The highest is Say Amen by Brendon Urie and his friends. This song wore on me over time. The overall album wasn't very good, and aside from High Hopes, Silver Lining, and Hey Look Ma to a certain extent I didn't enjoy the album at all. Say Amen highlights all of the album's flaws. The song and the lyrics don't really fit together, as its just kinda a party song but Urie is trying to make it seem like this is the most important thing ever. Also, I just don't like the production here. Sorry to those who love this song, but I don't get it.
~The next up in terms of our non-hits is Hailee Steinfeld & Alesso with Let Me Go and oh my god this song is so amazing. I love literally everything about this. Hailee sounds fantastic, FGL's verse is really solid, the production is great, the drop is catchy as hell and the lyrics are pretty well written. This was my most streamed song of the entire year, and for good reason. I absolutely adore this song and it really should've been a hit.
~I didn't always have the best relationship with One Foot. In fact, it was at one point my least favorite song on the countdown. To be fair, that was also when FRIENDS was my favorite song on the countdown so yeah things have changed. But now that its not on the radio all the time, I find One Foot to be a perfectly enjoyable and catchy tune. Not super memorable in the long run, but enjoyable enough.
~I don't really know how to feel towards The Last of The Real Ones. I did love at one point. However, its wore my patience out. The song is good, but it shouldn't still be in the top 10. This song flopped on Alt radio in early/mid 2018. Hits 1 (a pop station) picked it up in the Spring. It hit #1 over the summer. Its still in the top 10 in January of 2019. Thats a problem.
~On The Loose and Want You Back are both very solid songs. I mostly enjoy the former due to a really nice guitar line and a pretty good vocal performance from Niall. It's no Slow Hands or This Town, but his debut album was really good so I'll still take it. Want You Back has a weirdly good falsetto mixed with a killer baseline. During the summer I kept forgetting the song was still on the countdown. I also forgot how it started a lot during that time. Why am I bringing this up? Uhhhhhhhh
~Hits 1, why do you let I Wanna Know become huge while underrating any popular rap song. The is quite possibly the most generic song of the entire year. And this was the year ZAYN released Let Me. Let's just move on, because this song isn't really worth anyone's time.
~For the longest time, there was just something about Good Old Days that didn't click with me, and I wasn't quite sure what it was. I think I finalize realize what it is. Kesha delivers a very soulful chorus, and she sounds pretty good. Macklemore's verses are pretty restrained, and he also sounds good. However, the two parts don't really fit together. They kinda sounds like they aren't exactly on the same page as to what song they're performing. But whatever its still enjoyable enough.
~Don't Go Breaking My Heart still sucks. Their autotuned falsettos sounds like shit. The production is pretty annoying. The chorus is grating and makes me want to loathe. The lyrics are generic. Enough said.
~Done For Me is another fantastic song. The beat is incredible. Like seriously, Charlie Puth deserves to be at least nominated for producer of the year awards. Speaking of Puth, he sounds great here, and he has great chemistry with Kehlani. But arguably the best part of the song is the lyrics. Its a duet that actually uses the fact that its a duet (take notes Bebe Rexha). They're expressing similar anger in the relationship, but for different reasons. That makes a very interesting song. Why is this so hard for artists to understand???
~Sit Next To Me and Side Effects were big favorites of mine from the year but for different reasons. The former is a nice chill song, where as the later is an absolute bop. I'm glad they both found spots on the list.
~I'm A Mess is a mess (wow I'm so creative, no ones ever made that joke before). But yeah its overproduced and Bebe sounds like shit. Also that music video was god awful.
~Everyone register your shock now: I like a Halsey song. Alone is a bit forgettable without Big Sean in it, but its still pretty great nonetheless. I'm glad its here. Similarly, while I do find Love So Soft to be a tad bit forgettable I'm glad its here.
