Future - The WIZRD Album Review (Billboard 200 Top Debut Week of 2/2/19)

Background
Throughout the 2010s, Future has been one of the biggest names in music, but for puzzling reasons. There's not really anything special about him, but I guess he just sorta fit whatever role he needed to. He has 78 Hot 100 entries as lead artist, the 10th most in history. He's had plenty of hits, collaborating with anyone from Lil Wayne to Ed Sheeran. His highest peaking hit to date is Mask Off, which was a top 5 hit during the Spring of 2017. I always kinda liked this song, but it is ultimately extremely forgettable.

Another notable thing about Future is his success on the Billboard 200. He has had 6 #1 albums in the past 3 or so years, which I believe is the fastest accumulation of 6 #1 albums ever. In 2017, he released two albums in back to back weeks, and they both went to #1, making him the only artist to ever have this happen. So it was no surprise that his new project, The WIZRD took the top spot. Let's get into the album itself.

Overview
Wow this is dull. The beats in every song are so god damn similar. I legitimately cannot tell the difference between most of these songs. There are a few decent beats, but they ultimately aren't very memorable, and Future can't really do anything with them. So if the beats can't carry the album, can the main performer? Uhhhhhhh.....

I don't hate Future. But I also don't like him. I find his flows to be pretty basic, and his voice isn't very good. He just feels so not special, which makes it weird that he has so many records. But as far as listening to him for over an hour with only songs that have features, its not exactly an experience I want to go through again. Thats honestly why this post is so late, I just didn't want to listen to that much Future. But yeah I don't have all that much to say here, so let's talk about the individual songs.

Individual Song Reviews
1. Never Stop: Future feels pretty off beat here. I'm not totally sure if he actually is, but his flow is weird. The beat itself is basic as all hell. There's next to zero melody. So uh yeah this is just generic as fuck. It's almost almost 5 minutes long. 1.5/5

2. Jumpin on a Jet: I don't totally know why Future thought it would be a good idea to have a weird distorted voice going "jumping on and off the jet" the entire damn song. The beat feels exactly the same as the one from the first song. His flow here is decent, but holy shit that background voice is grating. 0/5

3. Rocket Ship: I legitimately thought the flow Future uses here was some sort of spoken intro to the song. It's that damn basic. As for the beat.....its still the exact same. I'm running out of things to talk about here. I feel like analyzing Future's lyrics is a waste of time, but I need SOMETHING to discuss. It looks like he's fucking hoes and doing drugs. Huh, I guess that was a waste of time. 2/5

4. Temptation: Oh hi Tay Keith. I don't really have much to mention aside from the fact that Future seems to have an odd obsession with jets. He's referenced them in like almost every song on the album so far. 1.5/5

5. Crushed Up: Here we have the lead off single from this album. And this isn't actually as bad as some of the other songs here. Thats mostly due to some pretty good production. However, I feel like Future doesn't do as much with the beat as he should. It probably comes down to the fact that Future just isn't an interesting rapper. Whatever, this is still one of the best songs on the album, 2.5/5.

6. F&N: Oh hey more kinda decent production sorta saving an otherwise bad song. However, once again, Future is bad. I don't really know how many ways I can say this, but Future is not an interesting or good MC. Also I can barely understand him 90% of the time. The production is good at least, 3/5.

7. Call the Coroner: I guess this melody is interesting. And the start of the song samples some news story about a drug kingpin. Future then proceeds to say he is a kingpin. Alright then. He also uses a really annoying vocal tone this whole song, which kinda kills any momentum the melody had. 1/5

8. Talk Shit Like a Preacher: Ok so what the fuck is that title? I guess Future had preachers who shit talked him? I don't know. Is he shit talking the preachers, or just shit talking in general? If he's shit talking like a preacher, why is he whispering when preachers are normally pretty loud? So many unanswered questions. But the production is actually pretty good here, so it's a 4/5.

9. Promise U That: You know what I love? Generic Tay Keith beats. Future also seems to love them, as this is like the 4th we've had on the album. I don't get why Tay Keith has become such a big producer, when his good beats are like one in every ten. The song is barely 3 minutes, but it feels so god damn long. So yeah I don't like this, 0.5/5.

10. Stick to the Models: Whoohoo halfway done and I feel like I'm about to fall asleep. This generic as hell attempt at making a chill trap song doesn't help my tiredness. Seriously though, I've been having problems with insomnia recently, but I think Future might be curing me. 0/5

11. Overdose: This is a short song at least? I feel like I should give it credit for that, and I would if it didn't sound like shit. The beat is mixed very poorly and Future is terrible here. This is one of those songs that just sounds like ass and its hard to explain why. 0/5

12. Krazy but True: So I think the premise of this song is Future talking about all the cool stuff he has and cool stuff he's done, and then saying "damn thats crazy but its true". So uh points for original flexing I guess? No points for the shitty beat though. 1/5

13. Servin Killa Kam: This song doesn't really work. The beat is trying so hard to set a tense atmosphere, but Future is just not on the same page. He's trying to sing. Future, you aren't even a good rapper, what made you think you should try singing??? Theres also barking dogs in the second verse so thats fun. Lastly, Future does his squeaky voice from Kings Dead at one point in the final verse. 0.5/5

14. Baptiize: The melody here is very relaxing. Too bad it doesn't hit with the trap beat. Also Future sounds.....good? I mean maybe its just that he sucked so much on the last song, but I don't hate him here at all. First time for everything I guess. But then the beat swaps halfway through and everything falls apart. The new beat is shit, and Future lost his pretty good sound from earlier. The first part is a 4/5, and the second part is a 0/5, so the overall song gets a 2/5.

15. Unicorn Purp (feat. Young Thug & Gunna): Holy fuck we finally have featured artists. Too bad I don't really like either of said featured artists. The beat here is not good, but its ultimately too generic to care about. Future's performance is not awful. He rides the beat well, even though the beat isn't that good. Young Thug, on the other hand, doesn't sound very good. Gunna's adlibs throughout the song are decent enough. Also I find it funny that noted Lil Baby friend Gunna is collabing with the person who Lil Baby rips off here (Young Thug). 3.5/5

16. Goin Dummi: I'm sorry I can't take Future seriously if he says stuff like "tummy" and "mummy"  right before he brags about all the hoes he's fucked. But yeah aside from that this is very forgettable, 2/5.

17. First Off (feat. Travis Scott): You know its bad when Travis Scott, a rapper I really like, does absolutely nothing to help a song. This is honestly just painfully boring and generic. This also seems like it might become a hit which uh can we not? 2/5

18. Faceshot: I'm legitimately considering just copy/pasting the same few sentences for the last few songs. Future, Tay Keith & co. clearly put next to no effort into this album, so I'll put the same effort into reviewing the last 3 songs. This entire thing has been a bad rapper saying worthless lyrics over generic beats. This song is no different. 1/5

19. Ain't Coming Back: I'm legitimately considering just copy/pasting the same few sentences for the last few songs. FutureTay Keith & co. clearly put next to no effort into this album, so I'll put the same effort into reviewing the last 3 songs. This entire thing has been a bad rapper saying worthless lyrics over generic beats. This song is no different. 1/5

20. Tricks on Me: I'm legitimately considering just copy/pasting the same few sentences for the last few songs. FutureTay Keith & co. clearly put next to no effort into this album, so I'll put the same effort into reviewing the last 3 songs. This entire thing has been a bad rapper saying worthless lyrics over generic beats. This song is no different. 1/5

Final Thoughts
